In the old days, Catholic people thought that after people died, they will go to heaven or hell or purgatory. Purgatory is a middle world between heaven and hell. If you committed a little crime, you should go Purgatory. One day, they heard that if living people prayed, people in Purgatory will be able to go to heaven.
So, they pray and welcome dead people with a lot of food and flowers. This is the beginning of Day of the Dead.
